Rio Grande stock car 5770 headed to Missouri

November 24, 2013 08:39PM
Former Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge stock car #5770 has found a new home in its birth state. Built in 1904 by American Car & Foundry in St. Louis Missouri, #5770 will be displayed in Sedalia Missouri as part of a project known as “Trails End Sedalia”.

The trails end project seeks to highlight Sedalia’s role as a cattle shipping center in the late 1860’s and will feature a cattle train display as well as a bronze sculpture of a cattle drive. D&RGW 5770 will serve as the centerpiece of the cattle train, which will also include a standard gauge ex Norfolk & Western caboose and a 4’ gauge 0-4-2 steam locomotive.

#5770 was moved from its longtime home in Alva, Oklahoma to Sedalia on September 25. Once in Sedalia, the car will be restored with the goal of having the completed train on display by the end of the year. The caboose has already been restored and the steam locomotive, former Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron #91, a 1925 Porter product, was moved from New Jersey during the week of September 16.
