Here are a couple of clues to the ice house having a loading platform for icing of refrigerator cars. In the RGS Story Vol XI pages 232/233 there is a Sanborn view X-1083 that appears to show an icing platform on the West side of the building away from the station. There is also an indication of a inclined ramp on the South side end that might have been used to load ice to the second floor. See also page 99 of the 315 book for a view of the ice house that shows what may have been the ledger board for an icing platform which likely wrapped around to the North end where there was another end door at the second floor level. It is not clear to me how long the Rio Grande used the ice house prior to it being used by Rio Grande Motorways and the building burning in 1947. Icing of reefers and ice for trains would likely have come from the Swift & Co. facility on Sixth adjacent to stub track # 69 .
