Reading thru the newspaper article, it turns out there was a relief train w/ a boxcar and Edna, and another train (a replacement?) heading south, which left Edna (later?) at Placerville and proceeded into Telluride with a coach, boxcar, and caboose. So maybe that's where the caboose comes in.
But the article says the train - southbound to Placerville? - was BACKUP up Dallas Divide. The parlor started to tip, emergency brakes applied, but the whole train went over. Only one injury here. Then the Edna and a boxcar arrive, take passengers onboard, but Edna derails and injures a bunch of people. It later goes to Ridgeway.
So... kinda confusing, but provides lots of details. The article here says the entire roadbed in this area was in terrible condition.
I've updated my site w/ some of the details from the newspaper article - THANKS for posting that !!
