The photo shows the Oriental Refinery as well as the SG/NG tank car transfer tracks on the north side of the mainline. These transfer tracks were for transloading refined oil products between SG and NG cars.
There were 2 unloading tracks at the Oriental Refinery. It was set up for unloading crude oil only. One thing I had not thought of is if the transfer tracks across the mainline were also tied by underground pipeline to the refinery. Oriental's product had to go somewhere.
The facility south of Adams State college was a Koppers (?) tie treating plant. There was a small yard out there known as the "Pickler Yard" (for "pickling" ties). In later years the trackage was used for pipe transfer. There is still a small amount of abandoned trackage out there in the field. The location is a toxic mess, everytime it rains hard out there, creosote oozes up in puddles.
