483 has always been a favorite of mine, as I learned to fire and run on that engine in 1975 and 1976. Last August, I passed through Chama and walked around the yard. I was appalled to see the degree of cannibalization/savagery to which the 483 has been subjected. In my opinion, the states should never have allowed the concessionaires over the years to rob parts off the 483 for the simple reason of expediency. I know the C&TS always operates on a shoestring budget, and that it is expensive and time consuming to have large parts such as cylinder heads, crossheads and guides, side rods, valve gear, etc. manufactured, but at some point the states need to realize they are eating their own children. Extend that policy to its natural conclusion and you'll see the C&TS finally shut down a few decades into the future when the last engine running finally wears out and is run onto the dead line to join the totally cannibalized and useless hulks of her eight sisters and cousins.
