In a way the use of cisterns is a small part of my overall fascination with how people lived "back in the day". I can remember my grandfather's farm having gas lamps, a windmill plus a one lung gas engine to pump water, and a two hole outhouse. God I hated that outhouse...who knows what lurked down in those dark holes! That was circa 1946. A lot of railroad employees and their families lived in fairly isolated communities, and I attach a certain amount of value to recording that life style.....that lagged life in the big city by a lot of years. So I do kinda wonder what the water out of those cisterns was used for....and how.
