John: I know nothing about the larger cisterns but here's a photo and some info about the cistern at the Big Horn section house.
The track is just above the cistern. A small section is visible above the stone work on the left side of the photo.
This cistern is 7' x 7' x 6' and behind the stone work the walls, floor and top are foot thick concrete.
