I wonder if all D&RGW track from Malta to Eilers was removed at the time when the D&RG removed 3 rail track up the Arkansas Valley starting from Pueblo. Out bound Ore shipments at that time were done with SG. The reason for NG was for inbound coal/coke and limestone. After the "Barrel transfer" at Salida was built, there was no need for D&RGW NG trackage from Salida to Pueblo or Leadville. SG is more efficient even if you have to tranfer it between gauges (at least in the 1920s). The 3 rail D&RGW trackage that was in use up to the late 1930s were for the interchange from the NG C&S in Leadville for inbound gold/ silver/ lead/ zinc ore for the smelter at Eilers( the trackage that was retired in Jerry's AFE postings). This D&RGW 3 rail was operated up to 1938 when the C&S started dismantling their mainline east from Climax towards Denver and at that time C&S shipments of gold, silver, lead and zinc shipments also ended going to the smelter at Eilers. Some D&RGW 3 rail track remained in the yards at Leadville only for tranfer of inbound supplies going to Climax and outbound molybdenum ores between the SG D&RGW and NG C&S until the C&S line from Leadville to Climax converted to SG in 1943. I think in 1944 the last of the 3 rail (NG) D&RGW track was removed from Leadville.
