I can hazard a guess as to what they aren't. After looking at the larger photo , you can see the Hydrostatic lube line come out from under the boiler jacket and go into the valve chest cover. It isn't a lube system but there are two questions that it raises.
1) why would you want to run what appears to be a small air pipe into the smoke box , which appears to come out from the underside of the running board and go into the box.
2) why have another air line come out of the smoke box and go into the sand trap?
I have a theory , but that is all it is ,so here goes. I'm wondering if the bottom air line is a delivery line and the upper is the air return line into the sand traps possibly used to evaporate water from the lines by passing it through a coil in the smoke box to prevent clumping of sand in the summer and freezing and blockage in the sand trap in the winter ?
thoughts?
