Dual gauge in O would be challenging, but probably easiest for the 1/4" AAR Finescale or Proto-48 or whatever you want to call it these days.
The issue with conventional O scale standard gauge as mass marketed is that the track gauge is wrong (unless you model the 5' gauge Panama RR, and the wheel flanges and treads for the Ow5 (O wide 5) are larger than the treads and flanges for On3, which is much closer to the 1/4" AAR fine scale dimensions. So the flangeways and guard rails on the common rail will be too coarse to work well for the On3 equipment.
Still, it is mighty impressive to see a switcher of one gauge moving cars of the other through well done dual gauge switch work. Now, does anyone want to put all that under catenary? Think C&S at Louisville, Colorado, where the C&S had a 3rd rail for Denver Boulder & Western interchange, and the track was also used by the Denver & Interurban.
