The freight equipment sent to the Navy at Pearl Harbor included D&RGW, C&S, NCO and F&CC to the best of our knowledge. It appears that the D&RGW, NCNG and C&S equipment went to the Naval Shipyard and the F&CC equipment to the Naval Supply Depot. All these cars were boxcars. No flatcars are known to us. This equipment was used on base only and was not used on or by the OR&L.The following photographs were taken by Mr. Bill Blewett in 1942 when he was stationed at Ewa Airfield as a 19 year old Marine and are from the Hawaiian Railway Society Collection.
In addition to scouring the mainland for usable NG equipment the Government appropraited a large number of boxcars being built for a South American NG railroad and diverted them to Hawaii. These cars were knon locally as "Argentine" or "Export" boxcars and were used by both the Navy and Army. These "Export" cars were interchanged with the OR&L.
Baldwin 2-8-0 C/N 41300, ex-NCNG #9, ex-SP #1, ex-NCO #14 was acquired by the Navy in 1942 and became Navy Yard #L-17 operating as a 0-8-0. This photograph is an Official U.S.Navy Photograph from the Hawaiian Railway Society Collection.
