Still hangin' in there?
On October 22 - The Morning After the Night Before (the third Great Event) - the C&TS' first photo freight was operated. We Phömers
* chased the train to Lobato (access was much less restricted in those days) and up the grade to Cumbres Pass where helper #484 was cut off and coupled to the "chase" train. By October, both engines were fully dressed, with Ernie's classic 'Toltec Gorge Route' herald back on their tenders at last, and they looked great in the early morning light. Rich Braden (employee2) and Jim Shawcroft were the engineers on #483 and #484, respectively

By mid-day we had de-trained at Phantom Curve, and I had climbed to almost the same spot where a certain young whipper-snapper set loose an avalanche in a failed attempt to bury me on 08/28/10

Our trains were turned at the Big Horn Wye, and by late evening we were at the west portal of Rock Tunnel. Winter was coming on, and there were already icicles hanging from the rocks:

NOTE: Most of these photos – both mine and Ernie's – have been posted previously on various threads of the NGDF. Please forgive the repetition, but I thought it would be easier for Cole (and others) to see them all on one thread than to follow links hither, thither, and yon

06/04/11 - The above all look WAY too reddish on my new monitor, which is apparently calibrated better than the one that died last April (at least my mentor Scott says that current posts look o-k to him on his meticulously calibrated monitor), so I'll re-edit and re-post the above as soon as time allows. - rs
