This thread has been good fun for me! Thanks, Charlie, Steve, and all for reviving some long-forgotten memories.
We pulled the boxcar for a while the first season, as our "tool car". In it we had every kind of tool and supply we could think of that we might need to get ourselves out of a jam (breakdown, hot bearing, mudslide, broken locomotive spring hanger, etc.) while out in the wilderness. It was stocked with drums of cylinder oil, the huge pneumatic grease gun and sticks of rod grease, oak blocks for re-railing, shovels, track lining bars, track jacks, heavy chains, jumper air hoses, a ton of stuff. We weren't too confident yet in our equipment, and the only means of communication we had with the outside world while we were out on the line was by sending either the leading or trailing motorcar to the nearest highway to go for help. It literally could be hours before anyone could be contacted and send help to the stranded train. And the motorcars themselves were not very trustworthy!
Eventually, we grew more confident and dropped the tool car. We were glad to be rid of the dead weight. I think it may have been the spring of 1973 that several of us bought CB walkie-talkies so that we could talk to each other and hopefully call for help, at least in some locations. It was several years before the C&TS could put in a real radio system.
