On my last trip to the C&TS last week, I took some time out to run up towards Lava and photograph a long "Pandemic Train" climbing up the Mesa. The road was great. Just a bunch of nice big rocks here and there.
The last couple years I've heard this called "Gravity Hill". I've been around these parts for a while and had never heard it called that. If anything, it was the hill at MP 289. Maybe if's just that there's been more railfan trips out of Antonito over the last few years, and the railfans needed to call it something.
And I attempted to keep my vehicle hidden from the riders. We were up on the rocks out of harms way, and a few riders were amused when they saw us. But as we started walking back to the truck (which was on the BLM road), I realized the track cuts back after the state line crossings and I was less than 100 yards from the track. They saw it. Oh well...
So is this really Gravity Hill, or just something someone made up?
I attached the first time I was here during a "Flanger Excursion" back in the Black Bart days. We never did find much snow to plow to Osier. Of course they did find it a couple days later at Apache Road crossing with disasterous results.
