Not wanting to yank the Victorian round-up thread (farther) off-topic.
The whole costume question can be a real can of worms (snake pit, morass, pick your term) in certain hands. 20-30 years ago I had several friends who were *very* into the whole Renn Faire thing (not my scene) who, one by one, were driven out by what they referred to as the Authenticity Nazis, or sometimes the Costume Nazis. People who would object to the costume somebody had spent months creating because it used the wrong type of fastener or was of fabric that didn't come into use until the 16th century instead of the 14th or other such nonsense. When these sort of people got into a position of power, they would suck all the fun right out of the whole thing.
I've seen the same thing at sci-fi cons, people telling 10 or 12 year olds that the costume they made for the masque is bad because they got some tiny detail wrong. (my favorite: Some kid had put *one* ST:NG emblem on an ST:OS uniform. The ass in question seemed proud of the way he reduced a pre-teen to tears.)
Anyway, be very careful with dress codes for events, there is a certain type of person who loves to prove how great they are by putting down other peoples efforts, and they can ruin the fun for everybody else.
