D&RG(W) business cars, numbering

November 06, 2019 01:24PM
It just occurred to me that some newer/younger members might have been confused by the letters/numbers for the D&RG(W) business cars mentioned in various threads recently.
To make it simple Originally (WJ Palmer era) the D&RG gave all it's business cars letters, A, B, C, and so on. Without my books here I can't list all the letters used but I also remember there were K, N & X at one time or another.
Later all the business cars were renumbered with the B numbers. the narrow gauge cars became B-1 thru B-8. B-4 was an 1887 car built for use on either gauge and seems to have been always used on the wide gauge after 1890 or so, it was scrapped after WWII, IIRC.
Just before WWI a special train (the Millionaires Special) derailed on the Silverton Branch and 2 cars were deemed un-repairable. I'll try to remember to post the details on which cars got scrapped & which got renumbered down with me next time.
