Steam and snowy mountains on the narrow gauge

June 30, 2019 06:54PM
After my ALCOS in South Africa thread morphed into ng steam and snowy mountains, I thought I would make this a separate thread

In many parts of the world narrow gauge steam and snowy mountains seem to go hand in hand, the Rio Grande narrow gauge of course included.

This first shot is a familiar one - the soon-to-be-revived 493 at Coxo crossing in December 1967

The next two are a bit further away - the narrow gauge Achenseebahn in Austria that is partly cog railroad out of Jenbach, but switches to adhesion operation as the line approaches the boat pier near Pertisau. AFIK the line is still operating, although it is surrounded by controversy. Some want to expand service by adding railcars to the line for local transportation, while others who built houses near the railroad want it abandoned (sound familiar?).

Here is another view of one of the Achenseebahn 0-4-0Ts hustling along on the adhesion section (OK, it is midsummer and there is only a little snow on the peaks). Traffic must be light, as usually trains have two coaches.

Boldly stepping away ( briefly) into NNG territory, here is another Austria scene - a standard gauge 0-6-2 cog engine near Hieflau on the iron ore line from Vordernberg

Here is a Henschel 2-8-2 with a mixed train on the 2ft 6 in gauge in Patagonia in 1978. For now trains still run on this section, although infrequently
