On a boiler tap, what does NS stand for?

I was showing a boiler repairman a washout plug tap that had NS stamped on the shank. We were looking at it and wondering what NS referred to. The thread series perhaps? I am aware of 12 and 14 pitch boiler threads, Whitworth threads and that smaller engines (contractors engines) frequently had pipe threads.
What are the designations for the various thread series?
