Slippery locomotives

I enjoyed watching the video link John West posted of the 2-10-2 on the Rio Turbio.

I have watched a lot of videos of these locomotives pulling some loooong coal trains. They all seemed to be slippery at times.

Given these locomotive could pull long trains, what would make them slippery? The spots where they would slip seemed flat or there were spots in the yard where grease might have been on the rails.

I find the workings of steam locomotive fascinating.

Was the slipperiness due to design?
Handling by the engineer?
Track conditions?
Other?
