NNG: Illinois Central Brass Tag found in pond

This was found a few days ago in a pond by a friend of mine.
Looks to be some sort of baggage tag. I asked him if there's an abandoned or active track near the pond and his response was 'no - the pond is located on property that used to belong to the McCoy family of the Hatfield/McCoy feud'. I would love to know how that tag ended up in that pond.
