Restoration of D&RG 1889 Tourist Sleeper Car 470

On Thursday, February 15, 2018, at 7:00 p.m., hear John Engs' presentation on the restoration of 129-year old Pullman tourist sleeper Car 470. The car is being restored to original-built condition, made possible with the acquisition of quite a number of builder's drawings. On Saturday, February 17, 2018, at 10:30 a.m., there will be a tour of the restoration site, located at the Pikes Peak Trolley Museum, 2333 Steel Drive (south of C&C Sand and Stone).

Tourist sleepers brought workers to Colorado mines, ranches, and railroads and homesteaders to settle the West. Their rather austere interior had twelve pairs of wooden bench seats and wooden bunks above the seats that folded up against the car’s side walls. Passengers brought their own bedrolls!

Pullman built ten such cars for the D&RG. The Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec bought Car 470, moved it to Chama in 1994 and then to the Pikes Peak Trolley Museum in August 2009. An enclosed shelter was erected to protect the car and volunteers from weather. Learn about the progress the restoration crew has made and some of the discoveries made during the process.
John Engs has been a "Friends" volunteer for almost 20 years, serving on the board of directors since 2009. He became co-chair of the projects committee in 2010. He has worked on several restoration and reconstruction projects. Since 2007, he has been site co-leader of the Colorado Springs group restoring Car 470. Volunteers work on the car every other Saturday.
