After enjoying viewing Jerry's recently posted images of the 476 and her new paint job, I had to wonder just what is done to a steam locomotive, or a diesel for that matter, prior to painting it.

What is the prep for a brand new locomotive?

What is the prep for a rebuilt locomotive just coming out of the shops after it's overhaul?

What would the prep be for just a paint job?

Is the old paint ever stripped off or do they just paint over it?
