As a committed jack-of-all-trades, I've often wanted to know more (i.e., enough to do it for a living if I had to) about shop work at the C&TS. I know a little about metallurgy, a little about mechanical engineering, a little about physics, and a very little about human nature.
Besides a lifelong career as a middle-aged apprentice, how could I go about learning about steam locomotive, carshop, and trackwork is done?
I'd love to do internships on track-crews and in the carshop (i have no problem with cleaning plugged up porta-potties so I bet I could get work in that area, anyway

So, how can I (and others) learn a lot about what goes on with the shop and track crews even though we're not anywhere close?
