SVRR roadbed hike

November 05, 2001 09:31AM
With the Phillips lake reservoir so low (about 20% of capacity), has anyone else hiked out to the middle of the lake? We were there yesterday, and hiked out, just upstream from the State Park. I am assuming that the roadbed is down the middle of the lake in that area. First you cross the old highway, pretty good shape for 40 years under water! Some macadame is still smooth enough to ride a bike on! It is on or near bank for quite a ways, then heads out on a large flat (normally 40 feet under or so).
What I assume is the RR is further out, and you can still see clearly, some ditches, along the sides, telephone poles (stubs), and even an irrigation ditch that winds along a small hill. All is remarkably well preserved. Only when you get near the point where it dissappears into the water, does it get muddy.
Fun exploration, and some ok pictures, kind of dreary though!
