Rio Grande Narrow Gauge - The Final Years, Alamosa to Chama'
by Joseph P. Hereford Jr. and Ernie Robart - there were only five westbound freights out of
Alamosa in 1968, and that includes the non-revenue transfer of locomotive 481 and several
carloads of company material on December 5. There is a photo on page 80 of this book of
the very last "Cumbres Turn" - on July 18, 1968, the only one that year - so we can assume
that there were trains to Chama westbound from Alamosa and eastbound from Durango the
previous day. The last westbound
revenue freight was on August 28, and the last revenue
freight over Cumbres was the eastbound train the following day. See [
