Re: More Central City Railroad

In the Shay #14 years I was a fireman at Central City on weekends and later I did odd jobs. At one point there was a bit of wood cribbing to hold the right of way in place on a tight curve. It needed some work so I was at the site. When the train would pass I would of course haveto stop to watch its' passage. THEN I noticed that on every uphill trip the right front wheel of Shay #14 would rise so high from the torque of the driveline that you could see daylight under the FLANGE! When Linsey and Dave Ropchan showed up later that day the were alarmed until I pointed out that it happened every trip! The curve kept the other wheel against the outside rail of the curve so everything stayed happy. I imagine that had to happen at the West Side, I wonder if anyone ever observed it? JP
