The grade on the west side of Lobato Bridge is more a matter of natural topography than anything else. As to why the DRGW never beefed up the Cascade and Lobato bridges, I think it was never that big an issue to allow doubleheading across them. I think history will show that in the past 30 years there have been more trains doubleheaded with large locomotives out of Chama than in the period of 1925-1968.
