Thank God! Keep the Shays as black as they can be, just the way they were when running log trains. The most valued daisy pickers (bless them) will not know the different and do not buy tickets just cause someone painted white stripes on the running board or wheels.
The White Mountain Central (Clarks Trading Post)at N. Woodstock, New Hampshire just had a railfan weekend with a beautiful Climax, Heisler and a Porter. The two day event of many moves and log trains only had about a dozen railfans and 20 photographer in total. Why?? Red drivers on the Porter, fancy blue boiler, fake headlight, antlers, and all kind of paint that fit the scene when the tourist site opened 40 years ago. The engines have the best of loving care but do not look historic, except as a successful tourist railroad. The only hope is that when EB&L 2-4-2T #5 is run live at next year railfan day that it will be a black logging engine, at least on one side of the locomotive. PRR
