What were the reasons for the K-27 valve gear differences?

December 12, 2010 09:31PM
I have always read/heard the K-27 as built were failures due to the vapor from the compound cylinders. Was this true?

Also, why were there three variations of valve gear when the K-27's were rebuilt?

Slide valve, piston valve with inboard cylinders and piston valve with outboard cylinders.

Which was the best of the rebuilds? I am guessing the slide valve versions were not well liked as they seemed to be the first to head for the dead line and scrapping.
