I believe there was damage to the cylinders and that is why is it was scrapped. There were many engines in the 50's and even the 60's which had significant damage that were rebuilt and put back into service quick examples 483, 497, 498. The Narrow Gauge was booming in 1953 when the 485 went into the TT pit with the oil/gas boom in Farmington just picking up steam.
