Carrying Russo's idea a little further...the late Virgil Staff recorded a great number of the Mexican 4-8-4s in their final 4 years under steam. He dubbed a number of tapes for me and one of the whistles that he captured will absolutely make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Tom Irion knows which one I am referring to. It has a hauntingly spectacular sound.
