According to John Norwood, the telegraphones were sometimes attached to rocks, trees, etc. I assume they sometimes did this for temporary purposes, probably in areas that would be frequented by section gangs, such as unstable areas of the roadbed. They probably used the box type arrangement like that one still in place at Toltec Siding.
