Answers in reverse:
There were no engines other that the #483 and it was out of service 9/21/1970 to 9/25/1970 because of a burnt grate. I took a good grate out of another stored engine and the CO state boiler inspector put it in #483 on 9/24/70 and fixed a ban that jamed the grate so it would not shake and lead to it being burned on 9/20/70 trip from Big Horn. He did this on his own expense.
2: My notes under Sunday 9/20/1970 say that Cole of Houston started tearing up the track at Dulce. Whether this was the Friday before of that Monday 9/21/70 I do not remember. In a few day he began ripping the track apart with a tractor at Chama west and in a week was nearing where the highway was near the track east of Willow Creek. He dragged a destroyer the separated the rails and ties and left a jumble of ties. He dragged the rails to trucks, torching the joints. I do not know how he picked up the spikes, plates, OTM.
1. The last move was Dec 6, 1968 of #483 returning to Alamosa with Caboose 0589, 04343 from Durango picking up 4 Co. equ cars a Sublette. This followed the morning move of #474-483 from Chama to Durango with 5 empty box, #481 dead, 1 gon w/flue pipes, 1 coach, 1 combine, B-7, one caboose 0505. This train had left Alamosa 12/5/68. This was the first move of #481 since rebuilding in spring 1966.
Last move prior to this was National Park Special on Nov 23, 1968 Durango to Chama and Nov. 24, Chama to Alamosa with coach 331, combine 212, B-7 , caboose 0505 with #483.
The last move on the Farmington branch looks to be on Aug. 31, 1968 with #483 returning with 12 mty box to Durango, 16 mty flat and 2 open end mty gon to Carbon Jct. powered by #483.
From 9/16/68 to 10/12/68 #483 and 473 used in filming the "Butch Cassisy...." and "Good Guys and Bad Guys"
Credit this data to Ernie Robart and it may be photoed in his new book D&RGW NG FINAL YEARS, due very shortly. PRR
