Thought I would mention to this group that our eighteen month project to learn the secrets of Saxonia are finally moving along at a much faster pace. What is Saxonia? It was a small town built around the Saxonia Smelting and Reduction Company, just west of Crossons, a quarter mile, on the main line of the DSP&P. I post periodic reports of our research activities on the DSP-P list. We now have the full interest and attention of the USFS and the CO Hist Society...to whom this site was totally unknown and only 45 minutes from my Denver home. The remains of the furnace and a 90+ foot chimney remain at the site. Newspaper reports from the Fairplay Flume of 1880 report that the furnace was using 25 tons of fuel per day. This obviously had to come in by rail because of the inaccessibility of the site. Even today it is hard to reachSaxonia and is one of the major reasons this site has been unknown. I discovered it when I purchased an early DSP&P 'hat-check' in near perfect conditon. On the back it listed the station stops and mile posts from Denver and reverse..to the end of track. This check shows the line as only to Buena Vista, and is older than the one shown on the back of Poors Pictorial Suppliment. More as we try to unlock the secrets of Saxonia.
